Kyststi

The West Coast Path - Moloney Variant

About the route - the official route was devised by Ærø Municipality as a complement to the Øhavssti; the latter runs primarily up the east/north coast, whereas the Kyststi mainly follows the west/south coast. It is a good route but has some surprising omissions, duplication, and errors. It misses out the wonderful harbour in Marstal, the beach houses at Eriks Hale, and the beach and cliffs west and north of Eriks Hale. It also misses the burial site at Lindsbjerg, Sct Alberts church, a good bit of Vitsø, and a few other things. And the first few kilometres out of Marstal follow the Øhavssti, which is a pity. But the concept is sound and much of the route is good.

Recommendation - Use my version of the route, now loaded on Alltrails and linked here, instead of the official Kyststi. It follows the official route for much of the way but rectifies (what I feel to be) the shortcomings listed above.

Splitting the route. It’s a long old haul, especially if there is a head wind. It can be walked in either direction and I usually let the wind decide. I prefer Søby to Marstal to catch dawn at Vitsø and finish with an illicit beer and franske hotdog and pommes arriving at Marstal harbour… You can split the walk neatly in two by overnighting at Vindeballe Kro or at the Voderup “primitive campsite”, or the Vesterås shelters, or by simply walking up to the main road at any point and taking the bus back to Marstal or Ærøskøbing.
